Traditional Kyrgyz feltwork is among the most distinctive textile crafts in Central Asia, and it remains relatively little known outside the region. The techniques behind it have been passed down for more than two and a half thousand years, originating in the Tian Shan mountains and sustained by nomadic communities.

Felt rugs and yurt linings

Two forms dominate the craft. Shyrdaks are pure wool felt rugs, made by hand and often richly patterned. Jawakybash are decorative felt linings used inside yurts, and they bring colour and texture to the interior of the structure.

The designs range widely. Some pieces use kaleidoscopic colour combinations, while others rely on natural tones and tribal motifs. Both approaches are used to finish a yurt interior.

How the felt is made

Felt making is traditionally women’s work. The skills involved are handed down through generations, and the process uses only natural materials. The wool comes from sheep that accompany the nomads, and the colours and patterns are produced with natural dyes; artificial dyes are a relatively recent introduction.

Decoration is where much of the craftsmanship shows. Felt is personalised and embellished using elaborate embroidery techniques, and the results are highly skilled pieces rather than simple utilitarian textiles.

Sourcing and supply

Production is based in nomadic villages and organised through local cooperatives and women’s cooperative organisations. The items are made by traditional artisans, and the supply arrangements follow fair trade principles. Decorative hand woven bands, used to secure the roof poles of a yurt, are also part of the range.

A good number of Shyrdaks and Jawakybash are kept in stock, but many products are ordered on demand from the makers. Buyers looking for a particular size, colourway or design can enquire about having it made to order.
